BREAST LIFT (MASTOPEXY) When breasts are sagging or drooping, due to age, gravity, or childbirth, a breast lift is often performed to bring the breasts to a more youthful position. Sometimes breast implants alone or in conjunction with a lift help fill out loose skin and sagging in the breasts due to decreased volume after breast feeding, etc. Other times, a mastopexy to remove excess skin is appropriate without implants when breasts are of adequate to large size and have nice shape but simply need lifting. There are several types of breast lifts, ranging from the mini to the full mastopexy, depending upon the degree of sagging. The mini (Binelli) mastopexy involves making an incision around the areola (nipple), removing some of the excess skin, and tightening the envelope, which brings the nipple position upward. In the full mastopexy, an incision is made around the areola and also extended downward from the nipple to the crease and under the bottom of the breast to remove excess skin. Dr. Miles is often able to make the incision only halfway across under the breasts. Although there is some scarring on the breasts, it usually heals very nicely and is not noticeable under clothing. A surgical dressing is placed on the incision sites, and the patient is required to wear a supportive bra for six to eight weeks. Discomfort can be easily controlled with oral pain medication. The same applies for breast reduction.
