A chin augmentation is needed when a person has a lack of chin projection, which can affect his or her entire facial profile. It can make the nose look larger than it really is, the lips look less voluptuous, and the jaw line appears too short. If the problem is due to a deficient lower jaw development or misalignment of the teeth, perhaps oral surgery may be necessary. However, in a majority of cases, the insertion of a small, synthetic implant placed in front of the jaw bone can correct a weak chin and improve ones facial profile.
Chin Implants
Chin implants are made of a solid silastic material, which does not leak or need to be replaced. Chin implants have improved greatly over the years, coming in a variety of sizes and shapes and contoured to resemble the natural chin. Now there’s even a special implant that adds no projection to the chin but fills in the indentions some people have on each side of the chin, providing a smoother, more attractive jaw line.
Chin Surgery Techniques
A chin implant can be placed through a small incision in the mouth or underneath the chin. Either incision will be discreet and both heal beautifully. Once the sterile implant is positioned correctly and secured with sutures or screws, the incision is sutured closed. Chin surgery is an outpatient procedure performed in our fully accredited surgery facility under local anesthetic with mild IV sedation. The surgery takes between one and two hours.
After Chin Surgery
In most cases healing time is fairly quick, and patients experience minimal discomfort. However, the chin area may feel somewhat numb for several months.
