EAR SURGERY (OTOPLASTY) The ears look best when in proportion to the size and the shape of the head. Protruding ears, usually a characteristic from birth, can lead to poor self-esteem. Children can be very cruel and often taunt individuals with this condition, calling them such names as “Dumbo” or “Mickey Mouse.” This can lead to emotional problems in sensitive children;
they may become self-conscious and in some cases, perform poorly in school.
Thus, an otoplasty, the facial plastic procedure used to correct this
condition, is usually advised early in life, around the age of five or six or as
soon as the ears have reached full size. Adults, too, can benefit from t The procedure is performed
as an outpatient in our fully-accredited operating facility under local
anesthetic plus IV sedation. The
surgery takes between one and two hours with a short recovery period following
the procedure. HOW THE SURGERY IS PERFORMED An incision is made just
behind the ear in the natural fold where the ear is joined to the head. After the necessary amount of skin is removed; the ear is reshaped into a
more desirable form. The ears are pinned back and secured in place with
permanent sutures. In most instances, no cartilage is removed, but sutures are
simply placed to hold the cartilage in a new position against the head. Each case is evaluated to determine what is necessary; the protrusion may
be the entire ear or possibly only the upper or lower pole of the ear. The incision sites are well
hidden and heal beautifully. Usually
any scarring is a fine, white line that is inconsequential and invisible to the
eye. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT AFTER SURGERY A
soft dressing is applied to the ears for a few days, and in most cases, a
headband is recommended for several weeks after the surgery to hold the ears in
the desired position. One must also avoid putting pressure on the ear areas until
healing occurs. Most patients experience
only mild discomfort for a couple of days, but oral pain and rest medication is
provided as needed. INSURANCE Generally, insurance does not cover otoplasty surgery that is purely for cosmetic reasons. Surgery to correct or improve birth defects or injuries may be reimbursable in whole or in part. Check with your personal insurance carrier.
